Poached Peaches in White Wine


Makes 4 servings.
  • 2 cups white wine (I purchased the Sutterhome Muscato from Walmart for $5)
  • 1 1/2 cups of water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 5-6 doughnut peaches (make sure they are firm when you purchase them, soft ones will turn into mush after poaching.)
  • 1 cinnamon stick

I saw this recipe from the blog Five Spice Duck. Aside from eggs, I've never poached anything before, but I am always hearing raves about them, especially poached pears (my next experiment, by the way), so when I saw this post, I was very intrigued. It was easier then I thought! And oh-so-affordable! That's me alright, I am all about the affordability. I give extra praise to a dish if its relatively inexpensive to make.

After I had made this and gave it to my boyfriend to test out (who loved it!), he told me he was reminded of the drink known as a "Hot Toddie." Of course, neither of us have ever had it before, but I looked up the recipe, and there are similarities! I personally think that's that cinnamon taste.

OK! So after I made this, here are some recommendations:
  1. I personally liked drinking it hot/warm instead of chilled.
  2. The drink felt as though it would fit in best when you're snuggled up on the couch with a blanket at the beginning/middle of fall. OH and maybe while reading Harry Potter. Sorry, I know I've provided the recipe a bit too soon. I'll remember to bring it up when fall rolls around.
  3. If you're not a big fan of sweet things, lower the amount of sugar you put in.
  4. And finally, this might just be my own demented mind, but I would personally would want to drink this when I am feeling sick and/or under the weather, hoping enough of it would drive me into a nice deep sleep. Mmmm...sleep...
Cooking Directions:
  1. Combine water, wine, and sugar in a sauce pan and bring to a simmer.
  2. Wash doughnut peaches and add them in. Allow 15-20 minutes, usually when the skins start to unstick themselves form the fruit is a good time to take them out).
  3. Take peaches out of liquid and allow to cool, then peel off skin.
  4. Slice peaches.
  5. Sieve liquid and drink, adding a few slices of poached peach to each glass.
Enjoy with a warm blanket and a good book.
